Jonathon Brewster

B: 1593 D: Age 66, 1659

Jonathan was Elder William Brewster's oldest child and our direct ancestor. This was their home in Scrooby. William was postmaster, a position he inherited from his father. The Separatists sect of Puritans, later known as the Pilgrims, met secretly in this home for a while. It was against the law to attend any church except the Church of England. William wrote scathing articles criticizing The Church of England as being anti-Christ. Church leaders, including Queen Elizabeth I, wanted to execute him, but he successfully eluded them. His Puritan ideals began while he was a student at Cambridge. Some of his Puritan classmates were executed.

Jonathan did not go to America on the Mayflower with William, but came later with his wife.
