John B Downey

This document is from the Republic of Texas in 1838.

John Downey was awarded a league (4428.4 acres) and a labor (177.1) of land. The requirements to receive the land was that he be married, taken an oath to the constitution of the Republic of Texas, and have witnesses that he lived in the Republic of Texas from December 15, 1833 until February 12, 1838, or five years. His land was in Red River County, Texas. The exact location of his land grant is in another letter hand written by Sam Houston in another picture.

He was Martha Fisher Downey's father and Ada's grandfather.

In the name of the Republic of Texas, John was given a headright of land, written by hand by Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas. It has precise locations of the boundaries of his property stated by which tree has his name, JD, written on it or other hand markings. Mr. Houston stated a few times that the Republic was, indeed, independent.
